“Despicable Me,” one of the biggest movie hits in 2010, features a mischievous crew of “minions” under the command of the dastardly Gru, voiced by Steve Carell. These minion characters served as the perfect starting point for “Minion Dominion” – an online application we developed in collaboration with Oddcast to promote the movie. Using speech recognition and 3D animation, users could command their own posse of minion characters not only through clicking or typing, but by speaking out loud. Say “fight” and the minions will trade punches and slaps. Say “hug” and they embrace. Say “dance” and they bob and move to the beat. Once users had commanded their minions, they could then send them to friends along with a personal message the minion would say out loud, adding a viral, pass-along functionality that resulted in hundreds of thousands of additional, “earned” user engagements.
